Financial analyst requirements, with the quote you would need
These postings want modeling and a narrative for a decision. Excel is the usual tool. A three-statement model is a specific claim. Do not upgrade a budget tracker into one.
Examples on this page are fictional composites, not customers and not testimonials.
Often required
The analysis you built
Forecast, variance, cohort, or a deal model. Name yours.
The decision it served
Hiring, pricing, a bid, or a monthly review.
Excel or another tool you used
Cite the one written down.
A data source
The ledger, a CRM export, or a bank file, if mentioned.
Who read it
A founder, a controller, or a client.
Often preferred, and easy to fake
- SQL you wrote
- A presentation of the model
- A scenario or sensitivity you ran
What a citation looks like
Forecasting
“Built the weekly cash forecast in Excel for the controller, using the AR aging and payroll calendar.”
Tool, cadence, inputs, and reader are all quoted. It is not a DCF.
SQL
“No sentence.”
Receiving a CSV is not writing SQL.
The gap people paper over
Investment-banking vocabulary (comps, LBO, CIM) does not transfer from a corporate FP&A bullet. Keep the actual work.
Questions
Can I say I am advanced in Excel?
Only if the resume shows functions, a model, or a process. The adjective alone is a soft claim and will not be treated as backed.
What if the model was joint work?
Say so. “Built” is a different claim from “maintained a tab in the team model.”
