Career change resume: show transferable skills honestly
Changing fields means your resume speaks a different language from the posting. The honest fix is translation, not invention: show the same kind of work in the words the new field uses, and be clear about what is new to you.
General advice, updated 2026-10-30. Examples are fictional. Nobody can promise you an interview or an offer, and we do not.
Find the overlap first
- Collect three or four postings for the role you want and list the requirements that repeat.
- For each one, find a real example from your past work, volunteering, or study. A teacher planning a term has done scheduling and stakeholder communication. A retail supervisor has done rotas, stock and training.
- Mark what you cannot back. That is your learning list, not a resume line.
Translate, do not rename
Keep your real job titles. Change the bullets underneath so they describe the work in neutral or target-field terms. “Ran parent conferences for 120 families each term” can become “Planned and ran scheduled meetings with about 120 families each term, and followed up in writing,” if that is accurate.
Use projects and training carefully
- Courses and certificates go under Education or Training, with the real status (completed, in progress).
- Portfolio or side projects are fine under a Projects heading. Do not imply they were paid client or employer work.
- Volunteering counts as experience if you describe it as volunteering.
Use a short summary to frame it
Two lines at the top can say what you are moving from and to, and which strengths carry over. It sets the reader’s expectations so the gaps do not look like an oversight.

Should I use a functional resume to hide the change?
Recruiters often find skills-only layouts hard to read, and some see them as hiding something. A normal chronological resume with translated bullets and a short summary is usually clearer.
