Required vs. preferred qualifications: should you apply if you don’t meet them all?
Job postings are often wish lists written by several people. Reading them carefully tells you which gaps are normal and which are real blockers, so you can decide quickly and honestly.
General advice, updated 2026-10-30. Examples are fictional. Nobody can promise you an interview or an offer, and we do not.
Sort the posting into three buckets
- Hard requirements: legal or safety credentials (a nursing licence, a CPA where the role signs off on audits, a commercial driving licence), work authorisation, location or schedule. These are usually real.
- Core skills: the tasks you would do every week. Missing one is a serious question to answer.
- Preferences: tools, industries, years and “nice to haves”. Often negotiable.
Years of experience are a proxy
“5+ years” usually stands for a level of judgment and independence. If you have fewer years but have done the work at that level, say so with specific bullets. Do not stretch dates to reach the number.
A simple way to decide
- Check every hard requirement. If one is missing and cannot be fixed, skip this role.
- Count core skills you can quote from your resume. If most are backed, apply.
- For each core gap, write one honest sentence: related experience, or how you would close it. Use it in the cover letter or interview.
- Ignore missing preferences unless the posting makes clear they are decisive.
What not to do
Do not fill a gap by inventing it. Adding an unheld certification, a tool you have only read about, or a degree you did not finish can end an offer after background checks, and it is the one gap you cannot explain later.

Is it worth applying if I meet most requirements?
Often yes, especially when the gaps are preferences. Nobody can promise an outcome, but a clear, honest match on the core of the job is a reasonable application.
How does ApplyHonest treat preferred items?
The evidence table lists each requirement with a quote, a partial overlap, or a gap, so you can see whether your gaps sit in the core or in the extras.
