Using ChatGPT or AI to tailor your resume without fabricating anything
AI writing tools are good at fluent wording and quick reordering. They are also prone to filling gaps with plausible inventions: a tool from the posting, a percentage, a job title one step higher. You are responsible for every word you send.
General advice, updated 2026-10-30. Examples are fictional. Nobody can promise you an interview or an offer, and we do not.
The common fabrications
- Tools or skills copied from the job posting into your bullets or skills list.
- Metrics that did not exist: “reduced costs by 25%”.
- Upgraded titles or scope: “led” instead of “supported”, “managed a team” when you did not.
- Merged or shifted dates, employers or degrees.
If you use a general chatbot
- Tell it explicitly: use only facts in my resume; do not add tools, numbers, employers, titles or credentials.
- Ask it to list every change it made and the source sentence for each.
- Compare each rewritten bullet with your original, line by line.
- Remove anything you could not explain in an interview.
- Check the privacy settings of the tool before pasting personal details, and remove your phone and address if they are not needed.
How ApplyHonest handles this
ApplyHonest first shows the evidence table: each requirement with the sentence that backs it, or a gap. A paid tailoring then rewrites only from your own sentences, and a guard removes any tool, number or name that is not in the source sentence, telling you what it removed. Resume text is deleted within 30 days, or immediately if you press delete, and is not used to train models.
It is not an ATS score and it cannot promise interviews. It is there to help you send a tailored file you can stand behind.

Is it acceptable to use AI to write a resume?
Many people do, and employers’ views vary. What matters is that every claim is true and you can talk about it. Some applications ask you to disclose AI use; follow their instructions.
Can recruiters tell a resume was written by AI?
Sometimes the generic wording is obvious. The bigger risk is not detection but invented details that fall apart in an interview or background check.
