How to quantify resume achievements without inventing numbers
“Increased efficiency by 40%” is the most common invented line on a resume. Interviewers ask how it was measured. If you cannot answer, the number hurts you. There are honest ways to show scale and impact.
General advice, updated 2026-10-30. Examples are fictional. Nobody can promise you an interview or an offer, and we do not.
Where to find real numbers
- Volumes you handled: tickets a week, accounts, patients per shift, orders, reports, students.
- Size: team, budget you managed, number of locations, users of a tool you built.
- Frequency and time: daily, weekly close, a deadline you met, turnaround you were responsible for.
- Records you can check: performance reviews, dashboards, sprint reports, emails announcing a launch.
Estimating honestly
If you know a figure roughly and can explain how, an approximate number is acceptable: “about 30 tickets a day” or “a team of roughly 12”. Use words like “about” or “over” only for figures you could defend. Never present a guess as a measured result.
Impact without a number
When there is no figure, describe the decision or change your work enabled.
Impact without a metric
Before: Improved reporting processes, increasing efficiency by 40%.
After: Replaced a manual spreadsheet export with a scheduled SQL report, so the finance team stopped rebuilding it each month.
The second version makes no measured claim, names the change and the user, and holds up in an interview.
Check every number before you send
- For each number, ask: where did this come from?
- If the answer is “it sounds right”, remove it or replace it with a description.
- Make sure the same number matches your LinkedIn profile and anything you would say aloud.

Will a resume without metrics be rejected?
Metrics help when they are real. Specific, verifiable descriptions of what you did and for whom are also strong. Invented figures are a bigger risk than missing ones.
Does ApplyHonest add numbers to my bullets?
No. The tailoring guard removes any number, tool or employer that is not in your source sentence before you see the rewrite.
