How to list freelance and contract work on your resume
Freelance and contract work is real experience, and it can be presented as clearly as a salaried job. The common mistakes are in both directions: hiding it, or dressing it up as something bigger than it was.
General advice, updated 2026-10-30. Examples are fictional. Nobody can promise you an interview or an offer, and we do not.
Choose a structure
- One heading for an ongoing practice: “Freelance UX Designer, self-employed, 2022–present”, with your main clients or projects as bullets.
- Separate entries for long contracts: “Contract Data Analyst, Northwind Logistics (via a staffing agency), Mar–Nov 2024”.
- Agency placements: name the agency and the client if you are allowed to, and be clear who employed you.
Titles and scope
- Use a title that describes the work you did: “Freelance Graphic Designer”, not “Creative Director” or “CEO” of a one-person business, unless that is how you really operated and you can explain it.
- Describe the real size of the work: number of clients, length of projects, what you delivered.
- If clients were confidential, describe them generically: “a regional healthcare provider”.
- If the work was part-time alongside another job, say so.
Fictional example: Tomás, freelance designer
Before: Founder & Creative Director, TB Studio. Led brand transformations for major companies.
After: Freelance Graphic Designer (self-employed), 2022–2025. Designed logos, packaging and social templates for 9 small food and retail businesses; managed briefs, quotes and revisions directly with owners.
Tomás worked alone with small clients. The after version is accurate, still shows client management, and the number is one he can list by name if asked.
Show the parts employers look for
- Working directly with clients or stakeholders.
- Managing your own deadlines, scope and invoices.
- Tools and methods that match the posting, used on real projects.
- A portfolio link or examples, where you have permission to share them.
Short contracts and overlapping dates
Several short contracts can sit under one heading such as “Contract roles, 2023–2024” with a line per client. If contracts overlapped with a job, keep both with accurate dates. Never stretch contract dates to cover a gap; a career break line is the honest alternative.

Does freelance work count as real experience?
Yes, when you describe it accurately. Readers will judge it by the clients, scope and deliverables, so be specific.
Can I call myself a founder if I freelanced?
Only if it matches how you operated, for example if you formed a company and ran it as a business. For solo work, “self-employed” or “freelance” is clearer and easier to defend.
Will ApplyHonest treat freelance bullets as evidence?
Yes. The free check quotes any sentence that backs a requirement, whether it comes from a salaried job, a contract or freelance work.
